Birding Rally Challenge 2013

Since we have the Olympics going on at this time I thought it might be fun to see if birding would make a good Olympic sport.  I blogged about this Birding Rally Challenge last year so it’s nice to see how it turned out.  Birding Adventures followed one team as they logged as many birds as possible.  You’ll notice that they flew on One World member  LAN for domestic sectors which is an excellent use of British Airways Avios at 4500 miles per sector.  Would you like to take up the challenge?  Start at the gateway of Lima and grab a North-South America award!

Blue-grey Tanager (Thraupis episcopus)

The Blue-grey Tanager (Thraupis episcopus) is a medium-sized South American songbird of the Tanager family, Thraupidae. Its range is from Mexico south to northeast Bolivia and northern Brazil, all of the Amazon Basin, except the very south. It has been introduced to Lima (Peru). On Trinidad and Tobago, this bird is called Blue Jean.

IMG_9784 IMG_9854This delicately hued little beauty has a wide range throughout Central and South America (easily reached with airline miles) and can be easily seen in most of the national parks.  I saw them in Crooked Tree, Belize; Tikal, Laguna del Lagarto & Savegre, Costa Rica; and Soberania in Panama.

.

The breeding habitat is open woodland, cultivated areas and gardens. The Blue-grey Tanager lives mainly on fruit, but will also take some nectar and insects.  This is a common, restless, noisy and confiding species, usually found in pairs, but sometimes small groups. It thrives around human habitation, and will take some cultivated fruit like papayas (Carica papaya).  Many eco-lodges put bananas out to attract them closer.  I have no problem with this since bananas are part of their normal diet.  Breeding season is from March to July. During this time, the female lays one to three mottled eggs, which she incubates for 12 to 14 days. Once hatched, both parents feed their chicks.

Adult blue-gray tanagers are preyed upon by felines, snakes, birds of prey and crocodilians. Other predators, such as raccoons, eat young birds and eggs. Habitat destruction due to deforestation is the primary threat to this species.

Chestnut Antpitta (Grallaria blakei)

The Chestnut Antpitta is a small, plump bird that usually stays well-hidden in dense vegetation. At least two widely-disjunct populations occur; these differ in voice, and may prove to be separate species once the genetics of the Chestnut Antpitta and the closely-related Rufous Antpitta are further studied.  This species has a small range, and numbers are likely to be declining as a result of continuing habitat loss. However, the range is not yet severely fragmented or restricted to few locations. For these reasons, the species is classified as Near Threatened.

.

Grallaria blakei is very patchily distributed in the Andes of north and central Peru where it is generally uncommon (Ridgely and Tudor 1994). Disjunct populations occur in San Martín, Amazonas, Huánuco and Pasco (Ridgely and Tudor 1994, Hornbuckle 1999b). If this bird is on your life list, fly to Peru on miles, then head off to one of these areas.

Birding Without Even Leaving The Lodges

Birding is often such hard work.  Sometimes you have to trek through mud, trudge up a mountain for hours or endure tropical humidity and rainstorms.  So even the most hardy birders appreciate when the birds make it easy to see them.  Still wild of course – but when you have a lodge such as Refugio Amazonas located in the Peruvian rainforest that attracts birds in the grounds, why not just sit back, relax and enjoy the view?

.

For more information, please see my review of Refugio Amazonas.  Peru is easily reached with frequent flyer miles.

I think this video was shot in the same bungalow we had, it sure looks like it!

Final Results Of Birding Rally Challenge 2013

The results are in and very impressive indeed!  A jaw-dropping total of 864 bird species were seen which represents around 10% of all the bird species on earth!  Hopefully they will post the exact tally soon.  There is supposed to be a checklist here but I can’t get it to load completely or even scroll.  In the meanwhile, have a look at the Peruvian guides that accompanied each group.  They have very impressive credentials and are passionate about eco-tourism as a means to conserve wildlife, especially birds!  If you have a birding trip to Peru planned it would be worthwhile trying to get one of them as your guide.

Birding Rally

They’ve been uploading some photos on their Facebook page, so be sure to “like” them and stay posted on their progress.

I blogged about last year’s challenge here.  I’d call this extreme birding because of the competition but it could also be fun and it does highlight the avian wonders of Peru on a global basis.

Inspiring The Next Generation

I make a point of “liking” all eco-tourism pages I find on Facebook and sometimes I see some great posts being shared.  One thing I think is extremely important is to share our love of nature and a sense of stewardship of planet Earth with the next generation.  They will inherit this world from us and pass it on to further generations in turn.  Have a look at this high school group vising Tambopata in Peru and learning about their wonderful native species!  Please share this post with any teenagers you know who may find this interesting.  Tambopata has some voluntourism positions available from time to time, what better way to develop an everlasting appreciation of nature and wildlife!  They also practice sustainable “green” tourism.

Dates have been announced for the 2013 Birding Rally Challenge which will take place in the North Amazon 9-20 June.

Here’s a video clip of last year’s results.  We will keep you posted on this year’s challenge as we hear more news.  I admire the creative way they are attracting more birders to Peru and boosting eco-tourism but I am not entirely sold on the competitive aspect.  Peru is one of the top 12 countries for parrot populations.
