United’s Devaluations & The Impact To American & Australian Eco-Travelers

My Feedly has erupted with blogs announcing the massive devaluation of United Airlines’ premium cabin awards, especially for partner awards.  There is a massive thread on FlyerTalk as well.  Since different blogs write for different types of travellers (luxury travel, domestic USA, backpacker travel, etc), I am only going to give my view on how this devaluation affects eco-travelers who want to go to the top birding hotspots in the world.  So far, I have looked at travel ex-Australia and ex-USA.  SInce I am planning a trip to Africa in 2015, I also looked at intra-African awards.

WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED?

United Airlines has arguably the world’s best rates for business & first class travel of all the major carriers.  True, US Airways may be cheaper but they are far less flexible.  Most miles & points collectors prefer to use them for business & first class awards on some of the world’s top rated airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Lufthansa & Swiss.

If you live outside the USA, you may or may not be aware that it is very easy for Americans with good credit scores to get 1000’s of miles from signing up for Chase credit cards to get the huge 40-50,000 miles sign up bonuses.  I have done this myself although to a lesser extent.  It has also been fairly easy for people resident in the USA to “manufacture spend” by purchasing Vanilla Reloads at CVS drugstores, loading them onto a Bluebird card and using the Bluebird to either withdraw cash at an ATM or pay the credit card online.  This has resulted in millions of United Mileage Plus miles floating around and it was inevitable there would be a devaluation.  What is really frustrating is that people who can’t manufacture miles (don’t live in the USA or near a CVS) have also been caught up in this devaluation.  This is the award chart as it is now.

This is what it will be in 3 months’ time.  I must say, at least they had the courtesy to give us 3 months warning!  Unlike Club Carlson who devalued their miles redemptions without warning.

THE EFFECT ON POPULAR ECO-TOURISM DESTINATIONS

The good news is that MOST destinations remained the same price if you travel in economy.  This blog is geared towards destination orientated travelers not journey orientated travelers so I will assume that my readers would rather travel in economy with the possible exception of long-haul overnight flights when having a flat bed to sleep in can be a big advantage.  Honestly, we all know economy sucks but it’s bearable for flights during the day and less than 6 hours.  The most popular destinations for birders are Central/South America, Australia, South-East Asia, Central Asia & Africa.

EX-USA

Economy awards remain the same with the following exceptions: Central Asia increases by 5000 miles round trip.  South-east Asia increases by 15,000 miles round trip.

Business class awards have gone up across the board with Southern South America taking the smallest hit at 10,000 extra miles round trip.  Australia will cost an extra 25,000 miles, Oceania will cost an extra 30,000 miles round trip & all Asian destinations have increased by 40,000 miles round trip.

EX-AUSTRALIA

Economy awards remain the same except for Oceania & Central Asia which increases by 10,000 round trip.

South-east Asia appears to be going DOWN by 25,000 miles which is surprisingly good news!

Business class (round trips) have gone up by 25,000 to USA, 40,000 to Central America,Northern South America, 25,000 to Southern South America, 30,000 to Central Asia & 20,000 to Africa.

South-east Asia has gone DOWN by 30,000 miles round trip!

EFFECT ON MY TRAVEL PLANS

I am planning to use my United miles to go to Africa in 2015.  My 2014 travel plans have been allocated to US Airways and all but one trip are booked.  I can’t bring this trip forward as I won’t have the cash to pay for the safaris and everything else that can’t be paid for with miles & points until I have been saving for a couple years.  Since I plan to use Ethiopian and they have been stingy with business class awards, I was already budgeting for economy awards which have not changed.  There is one flight between Mauritius & Port Elizabeth via Johannesburg which has gone up by 5000 for the one-way in economy or 10,000 in business.  Test-runs show that this route is difficult to get in economy so we may have to redeem business which won’t be all bad since it is South African Airways.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

First, don’t panic!  If you were planning to use your miles for an economy ticket, in most cases you won’t be affected.  If you were planning to book business class (if you want FIRST class you are probably in the wrong blog), make sure you book your 2014 travel before the increases on 1 Feb, 2014.  With the 331 booking window, this will cover travel up to the end of 2014.

If you are an Australian wishing to travel to South-east Asia (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia) which has excellent birding, then WAIT until after 1 Feb 2014 to book your trip.

If you are a Chase customer, keep your miles in Ultimate Rewards as long as possible to retain flexibility.  Avios are also an option and may work out to be a better deal so compare both before you transfer your miles.

ECONOMY TRAVELERS AREN’T TOTALLY IN THE CLEAR

Yes it is true, very few economy awards have increased in price.  This also means that people who would have booked business class but can’t afford it now will downgrade to economy.  It will be harder to find availability as more people will be trying for these tickets so book as soon as you know your plans are solid.

Birds Of Laguna Del Lagarto: Parrots, Toucans, Aracaris & Trogon

Since there are so many photos, I am breaking this up into separate posts.  There are other posts for  information on how to get to Costa Rica & Laguna del Lagarto.

PARROTS

I highlighted in yellow the ones I saw.  I didn’t get photos of the Crimson-fronted Parakeet or Olive-throated Parakeet.  I’ll try to put the photos in order of this list as there are too many to caption.

Lodge Review: Laguna Del Lagarto Rainforest Lodge

The Laguna del Lagarto Rainforest Lodge is one of the holy grails for dedicated birders.  It’s located in an unspoiled and virtually unvisited tropical rainforest, where you can explore the eco-system at your own pace while staying at a cozy jungle hideaway.  Birds are literally everywhere, just my kind of place!

HOW TO GET THERE

Getting to Costa Rica is simple with a Central American award flight.  The map below shows the route from the airport in case you want to hire a car and drive yourself.  Don’t laugh, but I was not brave enough to drive in Costa Rica (more about that later) and preferred to use either public buses or tourist shuttles.  On the map below, the red dot is roughly in the area of Selva Verde where the shuttle came to pick us up.

If you add in the insurances and the cost of the rental car and petrol/gas it’s not really that big a difference in cost.  I quite enjoyed the shuttle as it meant I could relax, look out the window and enjoy the ride through the countryside.  Just email Laguna del Lagarto and let them know when and where to pick you up from the options on their website.

IMG_9657 IMG_9658 IMG_9659 IMG_9660IMG_0527 IMG_0528 IMG_0529 IMG_0531

We finally arrived at Laguna del Lagarto in the early afternoon.  I think it took around 3 hours-ish.  The road was pretty rough so I was glad I wasn’t driving and possibly messing up the undercarriage of a rental car.

IMG_9661 IMG_9662

The friendly manager, Adolfo came and greeted us and chatted to my husband while I filled in the registration forms.  I had prepaid the room on Pointshound to earn miles but was pleased to learn they take Amex for incidentals such as meals, guides, the shuttle costs and souvenirs.

IMG_9663Rooms are very simple but here it’s all about the view!  You can sit on your deck overlooking the rainforest for some lazy birding as they are everywhere!  The guides here are fantastic!  They really know the local birds and speak English pretty well.  We had Didier as our guide and he went out of his way to find birds, especially parrots, even chasing us down at breakfast so we wouldn’t miss a passing flock of Olive-throated Parakeets.  You can use the canoes free of charge if you like.  I personally preferred to just walk around the grounds or hang out on the deck where the roof protected you from rain even as more birds came to frolic.

This was the only sighting of a Great Green Macaw, off in the distance, seen from our deck.

IMG_9670

It’s not just a room with a view, it’s a dining room with a view!  Buffets are served at breakfast and sometimes for dinner unless there are only a few people, then they bring you a very full plate of delicious food.  Lunch is either sandwiches or a full meal but with the heat of the day most people don’t want a heavy meal at lunch.  Wireless internet (WIFI) is offered in the reception and restaurant area.  It’s slow but adequate to check your emails.  Besides, it’s more fun to sit back and watch the birds eating their bananas on the adjacent viewing deck!

IMG_9981HOW TO BOOK LAGUNA DEL LAGARTO

You can either email them direct from their website or book on some hotel aggregators such as Pointshound, Hotels.com, Expedia.  Prices are extremely reasonable.  I wish I had more time to stay longer as this place had amazing bird watching!

MORE PHOTOS OF THE LODGE

Don’t worry, bird photos are coming on separate posts.  I have so many, it will take a couple posts.

The Coolest In-Flight Safety Video Ever!

Experienced & frequent fliers are often guilty of ignoring the usual boring safety videos shown on board before take-off.  Yes, we’ve seen and heard it all before.  You really should pay attention but most people just keep on reading or dozing.  Well this is one safety video that people will take notice of!  95,000 YouTube hits can’t be wrong!

The Birds Of Selva Verde & Sarapiqui Area

I was really excited about the birding at Selva Verde because of the amazing bird list and superb guides they employ.  We were up at the crack of dawn as usual for our birding walk with one of Costa Rica’s top birding guides, Alejandro Esquival.  He is also the person who gives the lectures around 5pm in a little pavilion near the swimming pool to give you an idea of what can be seen in the area.  Alejandro is also a skilled photographer and has some amazing images on his Flickr page.  He did a fantastic job of finding most of our targeted species and some that were so well hidden we never would have found them on our own.

Our guide, Alejandro Esquival

Our guide, Alejandro Esquival

Selva Verde Lodge has a checklist and more information on their website.  They do a bird count every year around Christmas time as they mention on their blog.  I have copied the parrot section here and highlighted in yellow the ones we saw both the evening before and during the guided walk.

.

This is one of the best places in the world to see the endangered Great Green Macaw in the wild and we were very lucky to see 2 flying over the swimming pool in the late afternoon.

MY PHOTOS

Sorry, most are pretty bad.  The birds were far away and often backlit so I can’t even see the colours.  I tried to identify most of them.  I did get some good ones of the Crimson-fronted Conure with Alejandro’s help.  At least he was perching nicely and holding still!

See full article from ABC News.

But don’t just read the articles, come and see for yourself!  The good news is that you can use frequent flier miles to get to Australia very cheaply.  I have another post with the details but please feel free to ask here in the comments about how to book the flights or how to acquire the miles at a very low cost.

Great Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus)

GGMThe Great Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus) is also known as Buffon’s Macaw or the Great Military Macaw.  Two allopatric subspecies are recognized, the nominate subspecies is found in Central America to northern Colombia, while A. a. guayaquilensis is found in western Ecuador and possibly south-western Colombia.

The photo above from Wikipedia shows the bird up close in all his glory.  I wasn’t so lucky with my photography as both my sightings were at a distance and came out blurry.  At least I got to see them which was exciting in itself!

IMG_9511This macaw has a very limited range in Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Ecuador.  Costa Rica has the easiest places to see them in the Selva Verde/Sarapiqui area and near the Nicaraguan border at Laguna del Lagarto.  Use a Central American award to San Jose, Costa Rica.

.

Great Green Macaws are the largest parrots in their natural range, averaging 85–90 cm (33–36 in) long and 1.3 kg (2.9 lb) in weight. They are mainly green and have a reddish forehead and pale blue lower back, rump and upper tail feathers. Tail is brownish red tipped with very pale blue. The bare facial skin is patterned with lines of small dark feathers, which are reddish in older and female parrots.

They are highly endangered and there are several conservation groups working to preserve them in the wild.  If you would like to help this fantastic macaw survive, please visit these projects’ websites.

WORLD PARROT TRUST
WPT has provided support in the form of funds ($15,000 US) through the Great Green Macaw Fund.

No More Swapping In & Out of United & US Airways On Points.com

Even though the swapping rate is terrible, it at least provides something to do with orphaned points.  I’d rather have 153 AA or UA miles than 1001 useless Frontier miles when I don’t collect in that program.  So I went onto Points.com and saw that the trade and exchange sections have been greyed out on both United Airlines and US Airways.  It should look like the American Airlines account with trade & exchange in blue with a hyperlink.  Not wanting to get stuck with orphaned miles, I requested the exchange of 300 Best Buy & 1001 Frontier miles to AA before that program also drops out of the swapping options.  If you have any points or miles accounts with small balances you can’t use, you might as well swap them into an account you plan to use!
