Birds Of The Indian Ocean Islands – Field Guide

This is where I messed up.  Since I live in Australia, I thought I could save on shipping and buy this book in South Africa or Mauritius and have it on hand for birding in Madagascar.  I couldn’t find it anywhere!  What I should have done was buy the Kindle version to save on shipping and at least have something to refer to after birding in Madagascar.  Don’t make the same mistake, if you are Madagascar bound, this is the best birding guide book available.

Books For Planning A Trip To Kruger

I realize that the search engines will bring all kinds of people researching South Africa to this page, not just birders but people who are more interested in mammals.  While the routes I have chosen were selected due to my interest in birds, there are other resources to help you decide which part of Kruger National Park to visit.  It’s always good to have a mammal field guide on hand if that is your interest as you will see a lot more besides lions and elephants!

I’d go with the Kindle versions to keep your baggage weight down.  You can always take a photo and look the critter up later!  These affiliate links provide me a small commission and I do appreciate you using them for these or any purchases you make at Amazon.com

Sasol/Princeton Field Guide: Birds Of Southern Africa

I am a bit confused as this book seems to have two publishers, this may be a geographical thing.  I bought the 3rd edition (2002) published by Sasol the last time we were in South Africa in April 2009 and found the maps and illustrations to be of a very high standard.  The latest edition – 4th edition was published by Princeton in Nov 2011 (at least for the USA market) and is available on Amazon.com.  The authors are the same – Ian Sinclair, Phil Hockey, Warwick Tarboton & Peter Ryan.
