Tamron 150-600 f/5-f/6.3 Compared To Other Zoom Lenses For Birds

I came across this video on Youtube with a very interesting comparison between the Tamron 150-600 f/5-f/6.3 with other lenses such as Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L & 400mm f/5.6 prime.  I have both the Canon lenses but I find myself using the zoom lens a lot more since I need to go wide to locate the bird in the sky or a tree, then zoom in on him.  The prime lens doesn’t allow for that.  I really have to admire the physical strength of the photographer in this video, that Tamron weighs 1951 g (4.30 lb)!  By comparison, the Canon 100-400 zoom weighs 1380 g (3.04 lb) and it’s already hard enough for me to hold more than a few seconds!  More specs on this lens can be found in DPreview.

Photographer Of The Week – Arthur Morris

This is a old feature I am resurrecting.  Each week, I will highlight a gallery of superb bird photography by a professional photographer.  I am hoping to provide inspiration both for eco-travel and for us to improve our photography skills.

This week, I am showcasing the gallery of  African Birds by Arthur Morris.  Since I am planning a trip there in the near future, I am excited to see what can be achieved, even though I don’t have near the skills Mr Morris has!   His work is copyrighted so I will simply link to his gallery.  He has a lot of other galleries linked at the top so enjoy!

Photographer Of The Week – Gary Jones

This is an older feature I have resurrected.  Each week, I will highlight a gallery of superb bird photography by a professional photographer.  I am hoping to provide inspiration both for eco-travel and for us to improve our photography skills.

This week I am highlighting the dramatic bird photography of Gary Jones.  His photos are so crisp and bright you feel the birds could fly off the screen!  His work is copyrighted so please visit his blog to enjoy his stunning photos.

Photographer Of The Week – Steve Oakes

This is a feature I am resurrecting.  Each week, I will highlight a gallery of superb bird photography by a professional photographer.  I am hoping to provide inspiration both for eco-travel and for us to improve our photography skills.

This week, I am showcasing the blog of British photographer Steve Oakes.  He has some amazing photos from the UK and various other places in Europe.  His work is copyrighted so please view his work on his blog directly.

Video Workshop – Lenses For Bird Photography

Grab a drink and a snack as this video on lenses using Canon gear is 2 hours long!  But there is an amazing amount of information here and the instructor has some gorgeous award-winning bird photos!

Towards the end of the video, around 1:50 he talks about traveling with all those heavy lenses on planes.   He has a different kind of vest which serves a similar function to my Scottevests.

Photographer Of The Week – Tim Laman

This is a older feature I am resurrecting.  Each week, I will highlight a gallery of superb bird photography by a professional photographer.  I am hoping to provide inspiration both for eco-travel and for us to improve our photography skills.

This week, I am showcasing the gallery of Tim Laman.  He has some outstanding shots of Birds of Paradise, both from West Papua (where I was in March 2013) and in Papua New Guinea (where I want to go but am afraid to)!  Also check out his Bowerbird gallery, I’ve seen various Bowerbirds in West Papua and Australia but I don’t get shots like these!  Since his work is copyrighted, I encourage you to check out his amazing photos on his website.

Quick Photography Tip – Silica Gel

Most birders have been there.  It’s early in the morning and you spot an absolutely stunning bird and you reach for your camera……………only to find the lens all fogged up!

This is a common problem in hot, humid places such as rainforests.  One thing you can do to avoid this problem is to keep silica gel packets in your camera bag.  It’s pretty easy to acquire them for free.  They are often included in food products and bottles of medication to prevent spoilage.
